Hopcalite catalyst is a catalyst created by Johns Hopkins University and the University of California in 1919, which is made of MnO2 and CuO in a certain ratio. Hopcalite catalyst, also known as carbon monoxide elimination catalyst, is used to removes CO by oxidizing CO to CO2.
Although hopcalite catalyst is a non-noble metal, it has incomparable activity than other non-noble metal catalysts. Hopcalite catalyst is divided into two-elements catalyst and four- elements catalyst. Two-elements catalyst has 40% copper oxide and 60% manganese oxide. Four elements catalyst has 30% copper oxide, 50% manganese oxide, 15% two cobalt oxide and 5% silver oxide. Under the premise of normal temperature and pressure, the instinctive difference between the two is not obvious. The preparation methods of hopcalite catalyst include coprecipitation, dispersion redeposition, impregnation and so on.
Hopcalite catalyst also has its own characteristics, because it is easy to absorb water . Accumulated moisture make the hopcalite useless , so it has high requirements for humidity. It must be used in a dry environment, the accumulation of water will make the catalyst lose activity. Therefore, in a wet environment, hopcalite catalyst must be used with desiccant.
Compared with noble metal catalyst, hopcalite catalyst has the advantage of highly cost effective , wide range of applications.Traditionally it’s used for fire mask or gas mask, mineral refuge chambers. When a fire happen or emergency occur, Hopcalite can last activity for 15-40 minutes. Activity of high-quality hopcalite can last over 30 minutes.
Hopcalite can also be used for diving equipment, air compressors and so on. It’s safe for people.
As the technology develop, the Hopcalite is used for removing CO from Nitrogen, in order to enhance the purity of Nitrogen. Hopcalite can react under the normal temperature without additional energy. That’s why it can safely used in Nitrogen purifying.
